This live classic was recorded in January of 1958 at Chicago's Pershing Club. The Ahmad Jamal trio featured Jamal on piano, Israel Crosby on bass, and Vernell Fournier on drums. Jamal's piano is in top shape as he alternates nimble runs and artfully voiced chording with dramatic use of space. Fournier manages to color his tight brushwork with skill and precision and is locked in tight with Crosby's round warm bass. The album is consistantly enjoyable, featuring a perfect blend of uptempo and slow numbers highlighted by the classic take on "Poinciana". The total playing time is quite brief at just over thirty minutes, but it's exceptional content is an argument for quality over quantity. Highly recommended.
