Tippett is a virtuoso pianist whose overwhelming musical gifts keeps him working across formats and genres. Rockers will know him from his stint with King Crimson (who can forget his work on “Cat Food”?) and innumerable sessions, and Euro free improv fans will know him from, well, everything. “Frames” is very much like his Centipede project: an orchestral aggregation made up of the cream of Continental jazz players, singers and compositional players, playing loosely composed and arranged and highly improvised music over four lps.

Just check out this personnel:
Keith Tippett (p, harm) with Stan Tracey (p); Elton Dean (as); Trevor Watts (as, ss); Brian Smith (ts, ss, af); Larry Stabbins (ts, ss, fl); Mark Charig (t, th, Kenyan th p); Henry Lowther (t); Dave Amis, Nick Evans (tr); Maggie Nicols, Julie Tippetts (voc); Steve Levine, Rod Skeaping (v); Phil Wachsmann (ev, v); Geoffrey Wharton (v); Alexandra Robinson, Tim Kramer (cello); Peter Kowald (b, tub); Harry Miller (b);Louis Moholo (dr); Frank Perry (perc)!
In my book, this lp is an absolute must-own.
