Valley Hi is the 1973 album by country rock/folk rock musician Ian Matthews. The album was produced by Michael Nesmith who also sat in on guitar. This album was recorded in Mike Nesmith's studio with almost incidently a country band which apparently wasn't Matthews intention. So instead of a really good folk rock album he came up with a fantastic country album. It opens with "Keep on Sailing" which is a beautiful country ballad. Strange thing is Matthews wasn't all that happy with it and rerecorded it on his next album "Some Days you Eat the Bear ..." Only thing is, the version on this album is far superior.

"Valley Hi" also contains an excellent version of "Seven Bridges Road" which for my money beats the Eagles version hands down. His version also predates theirs by a couple of years. The stand out track is the rootsy "Old Man at the Mill" which is a traditional country folk thing that had previously been recorded by the Dilliards. Matthews makes it sound like it came straight off the Appalachians.
