~~ Active from 1967-1969, Ars Nova were a New York based band that combined rock music with classical. The band was formulated by students of the Mannes College of Music. The original personnel for Ars Nova included Wyatt Day (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Jon Pierson (trombone, vocals), Bill Folwell (trumpet, vocals), Johnathan Raskin (bass, vocals), Giovanni Papalia (guitar), and Maury Baker (percussion).

Signed to Elektra by producer Paul A. Rothchild, Ars Nova were supposedly the next big thing. Rothchild called them “the most exciting thing since the Doors.” The publicity did little to help the band. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1968, and despite the excitement of Rothchild, the album failed to chart. After the album proved to be unsuccessful, Ars Nova changed personnel. Day and Pierson would be the only original members of the band to stay, adding Sam Brown (guitar), Jimmy Owens (trumpet), Art Koenig (bass), and Joseph Hunt (drums). Their next album, Sunshine and Shadows, was released in 1969, before the band faded away into history. Many of the songs Ars Nova wrote are worthy compositions that belong in any psych fans collection.
